Whether you are starting out on your artistic journey or have been travelling for many years, sometimes you need help to get your vision onto the canvas.
Many artists use a computer monitor to display a reference image while they work – but switching between variations, zooming in, or trying to find a filter that simplifies the image mid-session can be both distracting and time consuming. There must be a better way…
PaletteQ – Currently a Mac desktop app (MacOS12.5 or newer) designed specifically for working artists that allows interaction with your on screen reference while you work. Buy for less than a tube of paint, no subscription – why not try it free for 14 days?
Intuitive controls to give insight as you work

Click in your reference image to create a larger swatch of colour on a neutral background.
Use the swatch to help match your color mix.

Starting with an understanding of the big shapes in your reference is the key to success. This function gives 4 levels of simplification to allow an instant assessment of the structure of your composition.

The key to form, 3dimensionality and depth is value not colour – this function allows you to quickly switch to a colourless view to assess how your values relate.

Focusing too soon on the detail can cause problems. Squinting at your subject can reduce detail and complexity. This is the digital equivalent, 4 levels of Squint to help you focus on what matters.

Adjust the chroma, warm or cool your image to produce a different feel. This functionality can be really useful for tweaking a less than perfect reference or maybe compensating for your monitors shortcomings.

Using a grid is a great way to check proportions and placement. Reduce grid density as your skills increase or just use the centrelines or 3rds guides to keep on track
